Fun math

This project opens the door to the world of Maths

With Spirograph, geometry becomes fun. Young inventors don’t need drawing skills to create exceptional designs full of colourful patterns. In the end, they can add their own special touch and colour them just the way they like!

Denys Fisher

Denys Fisher

1808-1843

Was an english engineer who invented the spirograph and Stickle Bricks toys and created the company Denys Fisher Toys. In 1961 the company won a contract with NATO to supply springs and precision components for its 20 mm cannon. Nato awarded the company a £50,000 contract for five million units. With the money from the NATO contract, Fisher was able to dedicate time to what was to become the Spirograph. Between 1962 and 1964 he developed various drawing machines from Meccano pieces, eventually producing a prototype Spirograph. Patented in 16 countries, it went on sale in Schofields department store in Leeds in 1965. A year later, Fisher licensed Spirograph to Kenner Products in the United States. In 1967 Spirograph was chosen as the UK Toy of the Year.

ConceptsCovered

Geometry

  • Geometry – is the branch of mathematics that studies the shape, size, and position of figures or
objects in the plane or in space. The patterns made with our Spirograph are geometric drawings
    representing mathematical curves.

Gears

  • Gears – are round (cylindrical) pieces with the outlines cut into sections called “teeth”. They are
most often inserted into mechanical mechanisms, such as the gears of a bicycle or a clock.
They allow the transmission of motion and the alteration of force, frequency, or direction of a
    rotation.

Why this project?

The Spirograph project was created with three main objectives:

  1. Exploring the world of Geometry : In this project, young inventors will create a Spirograph and explore the world of geometry, discovering how mathematics can be fun
  2. Understanding the relevance of this experience in society: Through this activity, young inventors will discover how the concepts explored in the Spirograph project are relevant in engineering and technology, education, art, and even fashion!
  3. Encouraging Creativity and Inventive Thinking: By taking part in this process, young inventors will develop skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and motor coordination.

At the end of the project, the young inventors will have gained a deeper understanding of Geometry, celebrating their success by building their very own Spirograph! This experience highlights a clear link between creativity and the future!

Together, let’s draw the future.

Challenges for you

Ask your young inventor what excited them most about the lesson, or try using the Spirograph together at home. Turn this into a fun moment for the whole family!

For the boldest inventors, send us your videos – we’d love to share your experiences on our social media. Make this project a memorable adventure for everyone!
