Art and science in motion

The Space Painter project allows children to explore the fascinating world of physics and art in a fun and hands-on way!

The “Space Painter” experience involves assembling a robot that paints using principles of balance and motion. This robot is made up of a wooden base and a motor that, by spinning an unbalanced weight, rapidly shifts its centre of mass, causing the robot to move independently. This unexpected and creative movement of the robot enables the creation of abstract artworks as it draws patterns along its path.

This experience sparks curiosity and creativity by combining science with art. It allows children to learn important physics concepts in a practical and enjoyable context, encouraging them to explore the world around them with an inventive mindset. This reflects the mission of inspiring future inventors and innovators to think outside the box and apply their knowledge in innovative ways.

About InspiringInventors

Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci

(1452–1519)

He was one of the greatest geniuses in history, known for his extraordinary versatility and contributions across various fields such as art, science, engineering, anatomy, and inventions. Born in Vinci, a village in Tuscany, Italy, Leonardo da Vinci embodied the ideal of the Renaissance man, mastering multiple disciplines and leaving behind an unparalleled legacy.

Works such as the Mona Lisa, The Last Supper, and Vitruvian Man are iconic representations of this genius, who also excelled in designing and constructing innovative machines. Leonardo da Vinci influenced generations of artists, scientists, and inventors. His combination of artistic creativity and scientific curiosity remains a symbol of innovation and brilliance.

ConceptsCovered

Abstract art

The Space painter experience also introduces children to the basic concepts of art:

Introduction to Abstract Art: This project serves as a gateway to understanding the fundamentals of abstract art and discovering that, beyond humans, robots can also create works of art.

Manual skills: During the construction, children practice manual skills, such as assemble a motor that enables a robot to paint, while developing an intuitive understanding of abstract art.

Stable and unstable equilibrium

This project also introduces children to basic concepts of physics

  • Through building the Space Painter, children discover that the main scientific concepts explored in the activity are stable and unstable equilibrium. They learn that an object in stable equilibrium tends to return to its original position after being displaced, while an object in unstable equilibrium does not.

Why this project?

The Space Painter project was created with three main objectives:

  1. Understanding the importance of concepts: By exploring basic concepts of balance, children can better understand the significance of physics in much of what surrounds them in their daily lives, from building construction to the design of toys and robots, for example.
  2. Talking about art: In this project, we take a fun approach to art concepts! Through the Space Painter, children explore abstract art, encouraging their imagination  anda curiosity to flourish.
  3. Encouraging Creativity and an Inventive Spirit: By taking part in this process, children develop skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and motor coordination. The creations made with the Space Painter, in the end, make this experience even more special.

At the end of the sessions, in addition to building an Space Painter, the children will also gain a new appreciation for the world of physics and art, while celebrating their success with the creation of true works of art.

Together, we discover how physics and art can create magic!

Challenges for you

Ask your inventor what excited them the most about the session or challenge them to create new works of art with their Space Painter. And turn this into a true family exhibition!

For the boldest ones, how about sharing the drawings created at home with us on social media?
