Probably... an attraction

The Randomagnet project allows children to explore the fascinating world of probability, and magnetism in a fun and hands-on way!

This experience invites the young inventors to create a device called Randomagnet, which uses magnetic force to aid in random decision-making processes. After choosing three possible answers to their questions, they launch a magnetic arrow, which will indicate one of the answers depending on where it lands.

This experience sparks children’s curiosity and creativity about the world of randomness, probability, and magnetism . It allows children to learn important  classical mathematical and scientific concepts, that have been explored by many pioneers of science, in a practical and enjoyable context, encouraging them to explore the world around them with an inventive mindset. This reflects the mission of inspiring future inventors and innovators to think outside the box and apply their knowledge in innovative ways.

About InspiringInventors

William Gilbert

William Gilbert

(1554-1603)

Was an english physician, physicist and natural philosopher. He is remembered today largely for his book De Magnete (1600). Was one of the first scientists to study magnetism and electricity in a systematic way. His work had a lasting impact on science and influenced figures such as Galileo Galilei and Johannes Kepler. Considered the father of magnetism, Gilbert laid the foundations for the study of electromagnetism, which would later lead to the creation of electric motors, generators, and modern technologies.

ConceptsCovered

Randomness and probability

The Randomagnet experience also introduces children to the basic concepts of randomness and probalility:

RANDOMNESS: The concept of events whose outcomes cannot be predetermined.

PROBABILITY: The mathematical study that seeks to quantify the likelihood of random events occurring

Magnetism

This project also introduces children to concepts of Magnetism

  • MAGNETISM: The force of attraction or repulsion exerted by certain materials, demonstrating fundamental principles of magnetic fields

Why this project?

The Randomagnet project was created with three main objectives:

  1. Understanding the importance of concepts: In this project, children understand that probability and magnetism have been crucial to many scientific and technological advancements.
  2. Explaining the relevance of magnetism: With the Randomagnet, children understand the relevance of magnetism in relation to probabilities and the randomness of decisions
  3. Focus in Creativity and an Inventive Spirit: By taking part in this  process, children develop skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and motor coordination. In the end, playing with the Radndomaget makes this experience even more special.

At the end of the session, in addition to building an Randomagnet, the children will also gain a new appreciation for the world of probabilities, magnetism and randomness, and how they influence modern innovations, such as artificial intelligence algorithms (which rely on probabilities) and magnetism-based technologies, like magnetic resonance imaging in medicine and quantum computers.

Together, we discover how science is, probably, one of the most attractive fields of knowledge!

Challenges for you

Ask your inventor what was most excited about the session or challenge them to try making family decisions with the Randomagnet!

For the boldest ones, how about sharing the impact of that decisions with us on social media?
