The secret of light

This project aims to teach young inventors about the principles of light reflection and transparency, as well as how to create secret messages

By building My Mirror, pupils will develop skills in science, technology and creativity

About InspiringInventors

Christiaan Huygens

Christiaan Huygens

1629-1695

Was a dutch mathematician, physicist, engineer, astronomer, and inventor who is regarded as a key figure in the Scientific Revolution. In physics, Huygens made seminal contributions to optics and mechanics, while as an astronomer he studied the rings of Saturn and discovered its largest moon, Titan. As an engineer and inventor, he improved the design of telescopes and invented the pendulum clock, the most accurate timekeeper for almost 300 years

ConceptsCovered

Secret messages

  • Secret messages – a historic method of concealing information. They have evolved from
ancient civilizations to modern-day digital encryption. Initially utilized for wartime strategies,
they now serve everyday purposes, allowing discreet communication and private sharing.
Today’s technology offers various tools, from encrypted texts to disappearing photos,
maintaining the intrigue of unraveling hidden truths

Transparency and Light reflection

  • Transparency – refers to the ability of a material to allow light to pass through it without
significant distortion. It can be observed in materials such as glass, water, and air, where light
passes through them, allowing us to clearly see objects on the other side.

  • Light reflection – involves the change in direction of light when it strikes a surface and bounces
back in the direction it came from. It occurs on smooth and polished surfaces, such as mirrors,
where the incident light is reflected back in an orderly manner, allowing us to see our image
when we look at the mirror.

Why this project?

The My Mirror project was created with three main objectives:

  1. Understanding the importance of concepts: In this project, young inventors will learn about the concepts of reflection and how it can be reduced or cancelled out by changing the position and intensity of the light source
  2. Understanding the impact on society: This project enables young inventors to understand the impact of these concepts on today’s society, for example in mobile phone screens, microscopes, medical equipment, security systems, QR codes and data protection!
  3. Focusing on creativity and an inventive mindset: By taking part in this process, young inventors develop skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking and motor coordination.

By the end of the session, young inventors gain a new appreciation for the world of physics.

Together, we will uncover the brilliance of imagination

Challenges for you

Ask your young inventor what excited them most about the lesson, or try using the My Mirror together at home. Turn this into a fun moment for the whole family!

For the boldest inventors, send us your videos – we’d love to share your experiences on our social media. Make this project a memorable adventure for everyone!
