The Logic of the Monsters

The Monster Factory project allows young inventors to explore the fascinating world of flowcharts in a fun and hands-on way.

With this project, creativity goes hand in hand with logical thinking. By building the Monster Factory, young inventors learn how to document processes!

Through this experience, children have the opportunity to create a spooky monster and record every step in a flowchart, so that another team can later recreate it using only those instructions!

All of this takes place in an inspiring environment where the inventive and creative spirit of young inventors is celebrated, encouraging teamwork, spontaneity and curiosity.

About InspiringInventors

Frank Gilberth

Frank Gilberth

1868-1924

He was an American engineer, consultant and author, widely recognised as one of the earliest advocates of scientific management and a pioneer in time and motion studies. Both he and his wife, Lillian Moller Gilbreth, were industrial engineers and efficiency experts who contributed greatly to the development of industrial engineering in areas such as motion studies and human factors. Frank Gilbreth was also the creator of the first process chart around 1921 — a kind of “grandfather” of the modern flowchart. He developed it as part of his work in motion studies, aiming to understand and improve both industrial and domestic processes.

ConceptsCovered

Flowcharts

  • Flowcharts: A flowchart is a graphical representation of the sequence of steps within a process. It is a tool that helps document a process in a way that makes its operation quick and easy to understand (for example, in a factory process, understanding the best and fastest approach to assembling an object).

Algorithms

  • Algorithms: An algorithm is a finite sequence of executable actions designed to achieve a solution to a particular type of problem.

Why this project?

The Monster Factory project was created with three main objectives:

Exploring the world of flowcharts: In this project, young inventors will create spooky monsters using modelling clay in different colours, aiming to build them as quickly and frighteningly as possible. They will then describe the process using a flowchart and test whether another team can recreate the monster using only those instructions, helping them understand the importance of a well-structured process.

Understanding the future connected to these concepts: Through this experience, young inventors discover that the concepts behind Monster Factory — flowcharts and algorithms — are essential in almost every area of modern life, from industrial product assembly to software development!

Encouraging creativity and an inventive mindset: By taking part in this process, young inventors develop skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking and motor coordination.

By the end of the project, young inventors will have gained a deeper understanding of flowcharts, celebrating their success through the creation of their own monsters and their ability to interpret other processes. This experience proves that a well-organised creative process is frighteningly more effective!
