The Science of Music

This project helps children understand concepts related to physics and the construction of musical instruments

Is an educational project in which children build and personalise their own guitars

About InspiringInventors

Les Paul

Les Paul

was an american jazz, country and blues guitarist, composer and inventor. He was one of the pioneers of the solid-body electric guitar, and his prototype, known as “The Log”, inspired the Gibson Les Paul. Paul taught himself to play the guitar and, although he is best known for jazz and popular music, his early career began in country music. In the 1950s, he and his wife, singer and guitarist Mary Ford, made numerous recordings, selling millions of copies.

ConceptsCovered

Turning pegs and string vibration

  • Tuning pegs: Components used to tune the strings by adjusting their tension.
  • String vibration: The vibration of the strings produces sound waves, which determine the sound emitted

Frequency and sound; String and density

  • Frequency and sound: The frequency of the vibrations determines the pitch, which can be high or low.
  • String tension and density: These factors influence the speed of vibration and the pitch of the sound produced.

Why this project?

The Guitar Project was created with three main objectives:

  1. Understanding the importance of concepts: In this project, young inventors discover how physics concepts can be useful when playing an instrument.
  2. Understanding the impact on society: Through the guitar, young inventors learn that the continuous evolution of amplification technology and instrument-building materials makes it possible to develop new guitars and new sounds. Current innovations, such as guitars with digital technology that simulate the sounds of different types of guitars and effects, are examples of future possibilities that stem from the basic concepts explored in this experiment.
  3. Focusing on creativity and an inventive mindset: By taking part in this process, young inventors develop skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking and motor coordination.

By the end of the session, young inventors gain a new appreciation for the world of music.

Together, we will discover the sound to curiosity.

Challenges for you

Ask your young inventor what excited them most about the lesson, or try using the Plane Launcher together at home. Turn this into a fun moment for the whole family!

For the boldest inventors, send us your videos – we’d love to share your experiences on our social media. Make this project a memorable adventure for everyone!
