The sparkle of Christmas

The Christmas star project allows children to feel and have fun with the christmas spirit while they build a star, and a little Christmas tree

This project invites young inventors to create a Christmas Star!

The Christmas Star is an educational project where young inventors build and customize their own stars and trees. During the classes, the children decorate the stars and the little Christmas tree, and then light up the larger star using an LED. This interactive activity not only allows the children to create something beautiful and functional, but also fosters an understanding of scientific and symbolic concepts in creative and innovative ways.

Cecilia Paayne-Gasposchkin

Cecilia Paayne-Gasposchkin

1900-1979

Was a british-born american astronomer and astrophysicist. Her work on the cosmic makeup of the universe and the nature of variable stars was foundational to modern astrophysics. She determined that stars were composed primarily of hydrogen and helium in her 1925 doctoral thesis. Her groundbreaking conclusion was initially rejected by leading astrophysicists, including Henry Norris Russell, because it contradicted the science of the time, which held that no significant elemental differences distinguished the Sun and Earth. Independent observations eventually proved that she was correct

Stars

  • Stars: They are celestial bodies that have their own light. They are composed of gases that undergo nuclear reactions, but thanks to gravity, they can live (without exploding) for trillions of years. In our galaxy – the Milky Way – there are more than 100,000,000 stars. The Sun is the only star in the solar system

Motors

  • Christmas Decorations – In Europe, a long time ago (in the 16th century, to be exact), people decorated trees with funny things like fruits, nuts, and even candles! Can you imagine? Over time, this tradition gained a modern touch with colourful baubles and fun figures. Now, decorating the Christmas tree is like the ‘dance floor’ of the Christmas party all over the world!

Why this project?

The Christmas Star project was created with three main goals:

Understanding the importance of concepts: In this project, young inventors are encouraged to explore complex concepts in a practical and tangible way, while also appreciating individuality through the personalisation of decorations. It is an opportunity to inspire young minds to think critically and engage with the world in a creative and meaningful!

Understanding the impact on society: With the Christmas Stars project, young inventors learn that LEDs are fundamental to sustainable technologies, such as energy-efficient lighting that reduces energy consumption and light pollution.

Focusing on creativity and an inventive mindset: By taking part in this process, young inventors develop skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking and motor coordination.

By the end of the session, young inventors are ready to spread the magic of Christmas

Together, we discover how an LED can bring more brightness to Christmas

Challenges for you

Ask your young inventor what excited them most in class — or try placing the star on top of the tree, together, as a family!

For the boldest ones, how about sharing the impact of those moments with us on social media?
