Where imagination is stored

With this project, children will explore the history of coins, invent a new coin, and understand how safes and locking mechanisms work.

By building the Gear Vault, young inventors will learn about the importance of saving, the mechanics of gears, and the functionality of safes

Emily Roebling

1843-1903

Was an engineer known for her contributions over a period of more than 10 years to the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge after her husband Washington Roebling developed caisson disease (a.k.a. decompression sickness) and became bedridden. She served as a liaison and supervisor of construction through communicating between her husband and on-site personnel.

ConceptsCovered

Safe

  • Safe – a highly secure box, made of strong materials like reinforced steel, where we store
valuable items such as jewellery, money, and important documents. It has heavy doors and
special locks, often with complex electrical or mechanical systems. Safes are typically found in
banks, jewellery stores, and other locations, serving as guardians of our most precious
    treasures.

Gears

  • Gears – mechanical components consisting of interlocking toothed wheels. They are used to
transmit movement and energy from one part of a device to another. When the gears mesh, the
teeth of one wheel fit into the spaces between the teeth of the other, allowing smooth transfer of
energy and motion. They play a crucial role in various applications, from vehicle and bicycles to
    clocks and industrial machinery.

Why this project?

The Gear Vault project was created with three main objectives:

  1. Understanding the importance of concepts: By constructing their own safe and creating their own currency, students will gain practical skills in financial literacy, mechanical engineering, and creativity.
  2. Understanding the impact on society: By carrying out this project, young inventors gain an understanding of security and the protection of valuables, engineering and technology, economics and trade.
  3. Focusing on creativity and an inventive mindset: By taking part in this process, young inventors develop skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking and motor coordination.

By the end of the session, young inventors gain a new appreciation for the world of physics and mechanics
