The Super Magnetic project allows children to defy the laws of physics

In the Super Magnetic project, young inventors will learn about physics concepts!

The Super Magnetic experience is a practical and fun activity in which students constructed a model that made an object appear to defy gravity. Using magnets and a base model, they observed how magnetic forces could offset gravity, causing an object to levitate.

Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein

1879-1955

Was a German-born theoretical physicist best known for developing the theory of relativity. Einstein also made important contributions to quantum theory. His mass–energy equivalence formula E = mc2, which arises from special relativity, has been called “the world’s most famous equation”. He received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for “his services to theoretical physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect”.

Gravity

Gravity: It’s a phenomenon in the Universe where all objects attract, especially the very, very large ones! Thanks to it, we are comfortably “stuck” to the surface of the Earth, instead of floating around in space.

Magnetism

Magnetism: associated with the phenomenon related to the attraction and repulsion between objects. All magnets have distinct regions, called north and south poles. North and south poles attract each other, while other combinations repel (north-north and south-south). The planet Earth also exhibits magnetism. It can be considered a large magnet, with magnetic poles close to the geographic poles. This force creates a magnetic field around the planet that protects us from cosmic rays.

Why this project?

The Super Magnetic project was created with three main objectives:

  1. Understanding the importance of concepts: By assembling and operating the Super Magnetic, students learn about physics concepts
  2. Explaining the relevance on nowadays: Explain to the young students that, as materials improve, we may see more efficient magnetic levitation in transport systems, quieter motors in appliances, or faster data storage using spintronics. Understanding magnetic forces today gives the next generation the tools to build new solutions tomorrow.
  3. Focus in Creativity and an Inventive Spirit: By taking part in this  process, children develop skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and motor coordination.

At the end of the session, in addition to building a Super Magnetic , the young inventors will also gain a new appreciation for the world of physics

Together, let´s attract creativity!

Challenges for you

Ask your young inventor what excited them most about the session, or challenge them to use the Super Magnetic at home with the family!
